Spyderco Grasshopper Slipit SS PlainEdge Knife Reviews
12 of 12 people found the following review helpful The SLIPITs getting into "real knife" sizes, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Spyderco Grasshopper Slipit SS PlainEdge Knife (Sports) This is my third and the largest of the SLIPITs - the SLIPITs from smallest to largest (so far) are the Bug -> Honeybee -> Grasshopper. The Grasshopper reminds me of the blade that's included with Swiss Army Knives (as far as the size is concerned). Still, these are all tiny. I've uploaded a couple of customer images comparing the three knives to each other (and next to my "real" Spyderco) so you can get an idea of how small these things really are.The only reason I've marked all my SLIPIT reviews at 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact that they don't have a locking mechanism. Having worked with full-sized EDCs with and without locks, I can say that locks always come in handy, no matter what the size of the knife. While I don't plan on having to take down a wild boar with this knife, a simple locking mechanism would have been nice. Having said that, I still love this knife (as I do all my Spydercos). Even though it's tiny, it's still a fully functional blade - for... I love their knives and it's hard for me to buy from other knife brands; Spydercos are top-notch and just awesome. The grasshopper is a lot of knife for the money. It came out of the box razor sharp, and free of scratches or dings. Be aware that this is one of Spyderco's "slipit" knives. In other words, it uses a slip joint instead of a lock to hold the blade in place, so it's more of a traditional pocket knife. I like the Stainless Steel handle, it gives the knife a gentlemanly look. Even though the blade is made of a Chinese steel (which made me wince at first), it's actually a pretty good steel (steel: 8Cr13MoV) The one thing that I wish could have been improved is opening of the blade itself. I'm used to the easy one-hand opening of my other Spyderco knife the Paramilitary Spyderco ParaMilitary G-10... Read more 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Good cheap knife, but not of normal "Spyderco" quality, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Spyderco Grasshopper Slipit SS PlainEdge Knife (Sports) The blade on the knife is quite good. Decent steel, well sharpened. It is a solid little keychain knife. However, it is nothing like a regular spyderco knife (but you already knew that from the price, and the fact that this knife is made in China). The blade on mine wobbles, not so much as to be dangerous or unusable, but it is a bit sloppy. The blade also sits a bit too high when closed, meaning you can catch the very point of the closed knife on your pocket, cutting tiny holes in your pant leg pockets, or nicking you if you run your finger over the "closed" point of the blade. There are small gaps, and imperfections in the finish. So, just know that you are spending about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of a similar sized "real" Spyderco, and getting something of reasonable quality, but nothing like the "real" one. It may be quite a reasonable deal, but don't expect the regular quality. |
